Gunning For Double, As Inter Target Serie A Title  print

Inter Milan will face Chievo Verona on Sunday looking for a victory that would secure a fifth consecutive Serie A title and a domestic double, four days after Jose Mourinho’s side won the Italian Cup.

Inter beat Roma 1-0 to win the cup on Wednesday and leads Serie A with 76 points, two more than its only challenger for the title, Roma.

The Milan club is also bidding for a treble, as it faces Bayern Munich in the Champions League final on May 22.

Roma plays Cagliari and needs to win to stay in contention on the final weekend of the season.“Now there is another final at the San Siro with Chievo and we have to quickly forget that we have won the Cup,” Inter coach Jose Mourinho said. “We have to think about what else we can win, because the first dream has been realized.

“Inter is the team of the moment,” he said. “We are doing excellently. We have to keep going till the end and win the other two trophies.”

Mourinho has worries over his Dutch playmaker Wesley Sneijder, who went off after a collision with Roma’s Nicolas Burdisso, but he has shown in the past that he recovers quickly.

Sneijder was expected to miss the Champions League semifinal second leg with a thigh strain, but he recovered and played for 66 minutes in Camp Nou.

“I’m better. I took a bang on the leg and we shall see what we can do for Chievo,” Sneijder said. “I’m not sure if I’ll manage to recover or not, I do not know.

“We can win again. The first trophy is still the most important, but now we have to do the rest,” he said. “First the league and then the Champions League. We will not give up anything.”

In the last round of matches Inter beat Lazio 2-0, while Roma won 2-1 away to Parma.

Roma was furious with its city rival Lazio and accused it of deliberately making little effort to allow Inter to win and return to the top of the Serie A.

“It’s not Inter’s fault,” Roma midfielder Daniele De Rossi said. “If someone offers you a present, you would take it without question. I certainly believe Lazio could have taken points off Inter. The problem is our mentality. It is very small. Something like that wouldn’t have happened in England or Spain.”

Sampdoria meets Palermo knowing a win would secure it the fourth Champions League place. Sampdoria has 63 points, two more than Palermo in fifth.
