The NS Spirit tanker owned by Novoship, part of Russia’s largest shipping company  Sovcomflot, was attacked by pirates off the coast of Nigeria on Monday, injuring one  Russian crew member, the company said.

“The captain of the tanker said around 10 armed men boarded the vessel…and opened  fire from automatic weapons. The crew took refuge and the pirates left the vessel  shortly after the attack,” Novoship said, adding that there were no further raid  attempts.

One crew member was wounded by gunfire and is being evacuated.

The attack took place at 22:49 Sunday GMT, 30 miles from the Nigerian coast, when  the vessel was approaching Lagos port.

The vessel, with a crew of 22 Russian citizens and a Liberian flag, was transporting  37,700 tons of gasoline to Lagos port.
