With a few hours to the Delta State governorship election re-run, Deltans are poised to show the democratic world that they are ready to vote for the right  candidate.

Electioneering campaigns ended yesterday. There is tight security in the state, with the DIG, Audu Abubakar, saying 22,600 policemen have been deployed to  the streets ahead of the election. Every hundred metre, there is a police detachment. In some places, armoured personnel carriers are positioned.

Reports from Delta Central, the most populated senatorial zone, showed that the security has been beefed up to forestall any breach of the peace.

Great Ogboru, one of the candidates, is from the zone. It is believed that if he could have the bulk of the votes from the zone, he could emerge victorious.

In a chat with P.M.NEWS this morning, Mr. Olufemi Aduwo, executive director of Probity and Ethnic Society and National Coordinator, Rights Monitoring Group,  said the security arrangement so far is commendable.

He opined that the Sapele axis might be a tough zone, adding that the security in Asaba is also okay because Ogboru, an Urhobo man is from this zone.

Aduwo also commended logistics for the election like vehicles on stand-by for movement of election materials to various parts of the state.

“If the stakeholders, the politicians, voters and security agents cooperate with one another and with the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC,  the election will be free and fair. But if not, the electoral umpires alone cannot guarantee a free and fair election,” Aduwo declared.

Meanwhile, the image maker of INEC in Delta State, Mr. H. Osita, said the state Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC and the national Chairman of INEC, Prof.  Attahiru Jega were expected to meet today to discuss and finalise arrangement for the election.
