Osun Targets Golden Tourney

Mr Akin Adio, the General Manager of Osun Sports Council, has declared that Team Osun will end the games with “lots of gold medals’’in the forthcoming “Eko 2012’’ fiesta.

Adio stressed that the Osun sports council would do everything possible to ensure a good outing for its athletes at the NSF.

According to him,’’  our athletes are  readily on ground in Lagos after about  two eventful months of training and re-training, we are more than ready for this  all-important sports  festival in Lagos.

‘’ Kudos should be given to Gov. Rauf Aregbesola for his good gesture; he has already approved some allowances for the purpose of encouraging the athletes for better performance.

‘’The present administration in Osun is acting in the right direction by taking the issue of sports seriously in order to restore the past glory of the state, ‘’he stressed.

The General Manager however  berated the way National School Sports Federation handles school sports nowadays, where the training and coaching of  students are the  exclusive of game masters.

‘’I will like to state here that we are seriously working towards ensuring sports consciousness amongst our students, the schools remain the foundation for any meaningful achievement in sports.

’’ The National School Sports Federation, which is now saddled with the responsibility of administering sports in schools through game masters, cannot do it alone in a professional way.

‘’ Even when they are doing this , the technical assistance always come from us, in terms of provision of coaches and some other things, these game masters are more or less jack of all.

Adio called for a return to what was obtainable in the old Western Region when sports council played a pivotal role in sports development.

‘’In the old Western Region, when sports activities were being handled by Sports Councils, there was an effective sports administration in the area of sports equipment and human resources, ‘’ he said.

He also disclosed the plans of the Osun government to firmly entrench sports at all educational institutions in the state.

‘’I am very happy to inform you that the Governor has put in place a committee to rejuvenate sports in our schools, and the state in general.

‘’The Committee is known as Sports Development Committee, and is headed by  Chief Festus Onigbinde, and I am opportune to be the Secretary, it was  inaugurated  in September.

‘’It is the responsibility of the Committee to fine-tune the   way forward for sports development in the state, for sports  to get back to its glorious day, when the state was really doing well’’, he stated.
