The Inspector-General of Police,  MD Abubakar and Governor of Lagos State Babatunde Fashola, have congratulated Nigeria’s Super Eagles for their emphatic victory over the Stallions of Burkina Faso, in the finals of the just concluded  the Nations Cup in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The IGP in his message described the Eagles’ well deserved victory and their consequent winning of the AFCON trophy, as superlative and heart-warming. He said the victory of the Eagles is a strong unifying force that has brought Nigerians together in joy, at a time government and its agencies are doing everything possible, to ensure the well being of the citizenry.

The victory, he opined, “has once again brought hope and smiles to Nigerians as we continue our match to national greatness.”

The IGP advised Nigeria youths to emulate the patriotic spirit of the Eagles, shun crime and criminality, redefine their priorities; and contribute their quota in the task of building a great Nigeria that will be the pride of Africa, not only in the world of sports, but in the global comity of nations.

The IGP is not only a sports enthusiast but a consummate and versatile sports administrator. He was former member Nigeria Football Association, former Chairman Security Committee FIFA World Cup “Nigeria 99”, former Chairman Security Committee FIFA World Cup Under 19, Nigeria; and member Security Committee South Africa 2010, World Cup.

A lover and ardent player of Badminton, the IGP was a member of the Badminton Federation of Nigeria and former Chairman of Lagos State Badminton Association. He was also the immediate past Chairman, Police Sports Council.

Meanwhile, Governor Fashola commended the resilience, determination and team work displayed by the national team throughout the competition.

He said it was noteworthy that not only did Nigeria emerge as the champions, they also produced the golden boot winner in Emmanuel Emenike, the fair play winner of the competition in Victor Moses and the Samsung Most Valuable player in the Cup final match in Mikel John Obi.

He added that despite the fact that the team were not given any chance of excelling by many Nigerians at the commencement of the competition, the team were still resolute in their determination to succeed.

Fashola said the victory has vindicated his position that Nigerian coaches have got the managerial ability to coach our national teams to success but only needed to be given the right atmosphere and motivation to perform.

He reiterated that Coach Stephen Keshi demonstrated with his inclusion of 17 debutant players in the Nation’s Cup team including five home-based that there is abundance of talents in the country who are only waiting to be given the opportunity to excel.

While congratulating the coach and his assistants for a job well done, the Governor expressed the hope that the victory would be a starting point for the team in planning for a successful outing at the Confederations Cup in Brazil this year and also qualifying the country for a successful campaign in the FIFA World Cup in Brazil in 2014.

He added that if the understanding already being enjoyed in the team is allowed to reach its full bloom; the Nigerian National team will become a force to reckon with in a matter of time.
