Nigerians In Diaspora Hail Super Eagles

Nigerians across the world have been praising the feat of the Super Eagles at the just concluded Africa Cup of Nations which was held in South Africa.

The Super Eagles defeated Burkina Faso in a highly tensed final match scoring a lone goal within the first half of the game to win the coveted Africa trophy that has eluded the nation in the past 19 years.

Most African restaurants and bars in London were packed full of Nigerians, Ghanians, and supporters of the Super Eagles from Europe and the Caribbean during the tension soaked match on Sunday.

The Western Europe Correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria(NAN) reports that football analysts in London had earlier tipped the Super Eagles as favourites, and potential winner of the tournament.

Speaking to NAN, after the match, Mr Jehrome Ndukwe, a lawyer and member of the Central Association of

Nigerias (CANUK) said: “It was a well deserved victory, the boys played their hearts out”.

Ndukwe, however, said more goals would  have been scored  if all the opportunities were utilized.

Similarly, Mrs Grace Duniya who travelled from Derby to London to watch the match with fellow supporters called for the inclusion of more younger players to the team.

“You can see the difference in the selection of players, initially, Stephen Keshi was criticsed but  he knew what he was doing, the game of football goes with stamina which younger players have the better advantage,’’She said.

Duniya also commended the Burkinabes for getting to the  finals for the first time

“They are a very strong team also, I congratulate them for coming this far.’’

Others who spoke to NAN, also commended the Burkinabes, and urged the federal government to always motivate athletes physiologically before any competition.

The President of Nigeria Union in South Africa, Mr Ikechukwu Anyene, has said that Eagles’ victory in the Nations Cup will assist to re-brand the image of the country.

Anyene told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Johannesburg on Monday that the victory would attract respect to the country from among the comity of nations.

He said the victory would lift the spirit of Nigerians resident in South Africa and make them to love their country all the more.

“We believe that we have a good team. At a point, we knew we will win. But, initially, some of our citizens doubted them.

“Now, you can see everybody is happy, even those that did not support us are congratulating us.

“So, it means a lot. It will re-brand the image of Nigeria. It will lift the spirit of our citizens here.

“You know, football is a very strong and powerful weapon. So, It opened up Nigeria. In fact, when we passed over two shops today (Monday), you can see we automatically had friends all over now.

“So, I believe it will help to lift and rebrand the image of Nigeria.”

Anyene, then, urged Nigeria Football Football, NFF, to ensure continuity for the Eagles to propel them qualify for the World Cup and defend the Nations Cup title.

He said that he encouraged Nigerians resident in South Africa to mobilise support for the Eagles during the competition.
