Female teachers in the southern Nigerian state of Edo are fast becoming endangered species, with the fresh abduction by gunmen of two female teachers in Benin, the state capital.

The abduction occurred barely a week after three female teachers were released by kidnappers after collecting N5 million ransom. The women were held captive for 14 days.

The abducted teachers were identified as Mrs. Agbaka, the headmistress of Edion Primary School, Sapele Road, Benin City and Elebe P.O. of Uyiosa Primary School, Benin City.

It was reliably gathered that one of the teachers was seized in her car along with three of her children while driving to church. The second teacher was said to have been abducted while coming from the church.

The car was later recovered on Monday, but the whereabouts of the teacher and her three children was not known, and the abductors were yet to contact their families.

Chairman of Edo state chapter of Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT, Comrade Patrick Ikosimi, who confirmed the abduction, said that the women were taken from different locations in Oredo and Ikpoba Okha local government areas of the state.

Ikosimi added that he was yet to receive further details of the incident.

Meanwhile, the Board of Management of the Irrua Specialist and Teaching Hospital, Boyelayefa Debekeme, has appealed to security agents in the state to assist in securing the release of a Physician in the hospital, Dr. Edeawe Osahogie, who was abducted by kidnappers.

Osahogie was captured by gunmen on his way home from the hospital at the weekend.

Chairman of residents doctors’ association in the hospital, Dr. Charles Gigi, condemned the kidnapping, describing it as ignoble.

The chairman of the Board of Management of the hospital described the alleged abduction of Dr. Osahogie as very unfortunate and capable of militating against the hospital’s commitment to delivering qualitative health care to the people.

In a statement, Debekeme appealed to the resident doctors not to allow the unfortunate incident affect their services to the immediate communities served by the hospital and humanity.

He said that the board will do all within its powers to ensure that they were protected and provided a safety environment in the performance of their duties.

On his part, Dr. Gigi said “the unimaginable anguish that is associated with this inhuman activity of kidnapping is not one that any individual let alone one whose duty is the preservation of life should experience.

“The ARD ISTH strongly appeals to all concerned with security matters to do the needful to ensure the prompt release of our member. We can only continue to function and ensure the good heath of the populace if our security is guaranteed.”
