Amosun presents budget to the Speaker

Governor  Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State, southwest, Nigeria today presented a proposed budget of N210.21 billion for the 2014 fiscal year. The budget which was tagged Budget of Consolidation was N1.57 billion less than last year’s “budget.

Amosun who presented the budget to the 26-member House of Assembly at the Assembly Chambers, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta explained that the budget comprised N117.51 billion Capital Expenditure which represents 55.90 percent and N92.70 billion Recurrent expenditure, accounting for the balance of N44.10 percent.

In the breakdown of the budget, Education was given the highest percentage with N43.99B, which is equivalent to 20.93 percent.

Health sector was allotted N21.11 billion, Agriculture has  N10.52B, which is 5.01 percent of the budget.

Housing and Urban Renewal got N26.74B,equal to 12.72percent while Rural and Infrastructural Development and  Employment Generation was assigned N34.6 billion, which  amounts to 16.49 percent.

While speaking on his administration’s plan for the next fiscal year on education, Amosun frowned at those who are condemning his policy on the sector, saying, they are economical about the truth, added that despite the high over head cost, he has no plan to sack any teachers.

“Overhead cost is too high, but despite that, we are not going to sack our teachers. We have as at today, awarded 1,500 classrooms and we will continue to demolish the old structures and construct new ones. Some people will go and take picture of some dilapidated structures in our schools and post them on a social network, that, this  school is in Ogun State, they should continue with that. What is on ground is not what we can correct in just 2 or 3 or 4 years, but we will get there one day”, Amosun said.

He stated that as a stakeholder in the Olokola Trade zone, his administration would continue to drive development in “this critical project”. He assured that the government would commence the development of the zone with the provision of infrastructure “as we expect the initial group of tenants to commence formal development of their sites”.

The Governor said his administration planned to purchase 200 fully fitted Hilux vehicles to support the security agencies in the State.

Amosun told his audience which included former Governors, traditional rulers, top government officials, security agencies, political leaders and student groups that, “I can see an Ogun State that could rival any State in the developed world. The tasks are no doubt daunting and the challenges enormous but we are encouraged by the support of our people and smiles of approval on their faces for the projects and programmes we have executed so far”.

Reviewing last year’s budget, he said he was glad to announce that his government’s efforts at implementing the reforms it initiated had started to yield results.

The Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Suraj Adekunbi assured that the House would ensure the speedy approval of the budget, saying “This legislature will give the necessary attention to the bill in no time”.

Among the dignataries that graced the budget presentation were, Maj. General  Seidu Balogun, first Governor of the State, Gen. Oladipo Diya (retd.), Col. Daniel Akintonde, former Head of Service, Mrs Iyabo Odulate,Senator Biyi Durojaye, Prince Bola Ajibola, Aremo Taiwo Alimi, Prof. Isiaq Oloyede, Secretary General, Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, NSCIA, Otunba Fatai Arowolo of Aron Construction among others.
