The Katsina State Government has distributed drugs to prevent any outbreak of cholera and meningitis during rainy season.

Alhaji Ahmed Zakka, the state Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, said at the launched the distribution on Monday in Katsina that drugs worth N30 million were purchased for the programme.

Zakka said that the drugs would be distributed to the 34 local government areas of the state.
“The government made the arrangement so as to enable it to avert outbreak of the two diseases in the state,” he said.

He charged the acting sole administrators of the local government councils in the state to ensure that the drugs were distributed to all primary health centres.
Zakka said that the drugs were to be given free of charge and warned that government would deal with any person who diverted the drugs to markets.

“I warned Directors of Health in the local governments not to divert the drugs, the drugs are not meant for sale but should be given to people free of charge,” the commissioner said.

Earlier, the state Chairman, Association of Sole Administrators of the Local Government Councils, Mr Abdulrahman Marafa, said that the proactive measure would avert possible outbreak of cholera during rainy season.

“We will ensure proper utilisation of the drugs to avoid possible diversion by any health worker,” he said.

Marafa appealed to health workers at local government areas to embark on sensitisation of residents to keep their environment clean and healthy so as to avoid outbreak of diseases.
