The Lagos State Fire Service has flagged off the 2018 evacuation drilling exercise for Lagos State public servants, being part of measures to curb the tide of incessant fire accidents and prevention of loss of lives and property.

The goal of the yearly exercise was aimed at inculcating safety consciousness and equipping the worker with basic fire safety information.

The exercise, which was tagged; “Improving Safety Knowledge of Public Officers,” was flagged off by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of the Special Duties and Inter governmental Relations, Dr Jemilade Longe who lauded the move and reiterated the commitment of the state government to the safety of live and property of the entire residents of the State.

He added that the sensitization was quite timely considering the increasing rate of fire outbreaks in recent time despite the periodic safety advocacy embarked upon by the government to alert residents on the need to take precautionary measures against preventable fire occurrences.

While addressing the public servants on fire safety management, the Acting. Director, Lagos Fire service, Rasaki Musibau disclosed that the exercise was a yearly event that exposed public servants to measures to take in handling emergencies and to further ensure that safety equipment’ domiciled in their various offices are in good condition.

According to him, effective knowledge of fire safety information would help reduce high percentage of fatalities, injuries and destruction of lives and property and also guide against indiscriminate loss of lives ocassioned by carelessness and indiscipline acts.

The Fire boss advised the public not to undermine any fire outbreak no matter how small but to quickly contact fire service stations nearest to them or call the toll free number 767/112 for prompt response.

He urged the staff to share the knowledge acquired with their friends and families for the safety of all.

The staff were exposed to proper handling of fire safety tools, importance of roll call during emergencies (to ascertain that all head are counted), use of emergency exit and many more.

The peak of the event was the re-enactment of fire scene, demonstration of the use of fire safety tools and question and answer segments.
