The Osun Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mr Peter Oke, has urged stakeholders to support the crusade against road traffic violations to prevent accidents.

Oke made the appeal in Osogbo on Thursday while speaking at an event preceding the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, which holds every Nov. 18.

The theme of the remembrance celebration is titled: ‘‘Roads have stories, good or bad; make it good’’.

The sector commander said the day had become an important tool in global efforts toward reducing road casualties.

According to him, road stories could either be positive or negative but it is always negative because of the disasters involved.

“The United Nations resolution stipulated in 2005 that all countries must set aside November 18 yearly to always remember accident victims which Nigeria happened to comply with.

“Every third Sunday of November yearly had been set aside to remember victims of accidents and also an avenue to spread the crusade against road traffic violations,’’ he said.

Oke commended the special marshals for their voluminous services toward ensuring that carnages on highways were minimised.

He, therefore, called on relevant stakeholders to continue to support the command toward ensuring that roads are safe for motorists.

The sector commander warned that anyone found wanting against the road traffic regulations would be dealt with according to the laws of the Federal Government of Nigeria.

The National Secretary, FRSC Special Marshal, Mr Tunde Ajiboye, told NAN that the command would visit specific places to give gift to hospitals and religious organisations as part of the celebration.

Ajiboye, however, called on road users to support the tireless efforts of the FRSC in ensuring that roads are safe for motorists.
