Man Dies In Court

The court room of Chief Magistrate’s Court One, North Bank, Makurdi, Benue State, was yesterday thrown into confusion when a 51-year-old man, Mr. Agabi Mede, suddenly collapsed and died on the spot in the premises of the court , where his son, Terkimbi Mede was being  arraigned by the police for criminal offence.

P.M.NEWS learnt that the deceased came to the court with the intention of bailing his son, Terkimbi Mede of Agba Close,  Hudco Quarters, Makurdi, who was standing trial for allegedly  stabbing  another person. However, when Mede saw his son with other accused persons, the man collapsed at the entrance of the court room.

P.M.NEWS gathered that the counsel to the son, Mr J. I. Azege, drew the attention of the court to the incident which compelled the presiding magistrate to suspend the court proceedings for a while.

When the son of the victim ran out and called his father severally, there was no response from him.

The magistrate, therefore, directed that he should be taken to the hospital and the court was later told that doctors at Federal Medical Centre, Makurdi confirmed that Mr Mede had died about fifteen minutes earlier.

S learnt that Mede was arrested on 13 May, 2010 by the police following a complaint by Hemen Uva of Ankpa Quarters that he was drinking at Bem Hotels with a lady, when the accused attacked him with a broken bottle and injured him.

P.M.NEWS further learnt that when the case came up at the magistrate’s court , the accused pleaded not guilty to the charge and the Chief Magistrate, Mr. Edwin Ari granted him bail in the sum of N10,000 and adjourned the case till 30 June for further mention.
