The staff of the University of Ibadan, (U.I), yesterday went home smiling as their salary arrears for August and September, 2009 were paid into their different accounts.
Following a directive from the Nigeria Universities Commission (NUC) that no university should pay the salary of August and September 2009 when workers in the nation’s universities went on strike to press for their demands, U.I. withheld the salaries until yesterday when it was paid.
Information revealed that the payment followed another directive from the NUC asking all the universities in the country to pay the outstanding salaries which, it was further gathered, has been in the institution’s account since last year.
An impeccable source revealed that the salaries cut across members of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Non Academic Staff Union (NASU) and Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU).
However, the institution which has been paying the staff with old salary structure is said to be owing its staff two months arrears.
