Councilor Dies In AutocrashDies

Mr Mark Ukpor, the councillor representing Okuku Ward in Yala Local Government Area in Cross River State, Nigeria, has died in an auto crash.

His death brings to three the number of councillors killed in motor accidents in Cross River State in the last one year since Governor Liyel Imoke gave the councillors in the state Hyundai Accent cars.

Mark, who was 42 years old was returning to Abuja when his Hyundai accent car ran into a truck and was killed instantly.

“My husband and the person that drove the car died on the spot and their bodies were taken to Abuja, ” Mrs Annabel Ukpor wife of the deceased councillor told P.M.NEWS.

The lady, who was sobbing bitterly said the husband left behind an eleven month old son. “Before he travelled, he said we were both going to plan our son’s birthday party when he comes back, but that was not to be as he as came back in a casket”.

The Chairman of Yala Local Government Council, Barrister Fidel Egoro said: “the man was one of the most mature and level headed among the fourteen councilors in Yala and I wonder why this should happen to him.”

Governor Imoke handed each of the 196 councillors in the state Hyundai Accent cars in 2009 as part of their “working tool to enhance efficiency” but some of them have been involved in ghastly accidents.
