A federal lawmaker’s effort to empower people in his constituency turned awry when supporters carted away items meant to be distributed to the supporters.
Mr. Abass Braimah had planned to distribute sewing machines, motorcycles and plastic chairs to some PDP members in his Etsako West, Central and East Federal Constituency.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the event which took place on Monday was to flagged off Braimah’s campaign for the seat.
The lawmaker told NAN that the items worth N3.2 million comprised 1,600 plastic chairs, 32 sewing machines meant to empower 32 women leaders in the constituency and 32 motorcycles for easy movement of the 32 ward chairmen.
Braimah, after delivering his speech had proceeded to distribute the items when his supporters started scrambling for the items.
NAN reports that as the gate to the field was locked, the supporters started flinging some of the items over the fence.
It took the intervention of policemen, who shot sporadically into the air for some of the items to be recovered.
Braimah had in his address stressed the need for the party to be re-positioned across the ward and local government areas of the state.
“It is visible to the blind and obvious to the deaf that the party needed to be re-positioned. We should do this for the immediate and future needs,†he stated.
Braimah is aspiring to represent the constituency at the House of Representatives for the second time.
