Four undergraduates, including two brothers were on Thursday in Lagos, remanded in prison custody over a robbery charge.

An Igbosere Magistrate’s Court ordered that the accused persons — Paul Musa, 29, Osas Amenaghawon, 21, Jeffrey Amenaghawon and Sunday Daomi – be kept in Ikoyi Prisons till June 23, pending the advice of the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Charged with a two-count offence of conspiracy and armed robbery, the pleas of the accused persons were, however, not taken. The prosecutor, Sgt. Stephen Mono, alleged that the accused persons with others still at large, had on April 24 at about 9.30 p.m. in Ajah on the Lagos/Epe Expressway committed the offence.

He said the men, armed with axe and cutlasses, conspired and robbed Mr Olasupo Alimi of his personal effects, including five international passports, one digital camera, wallets, wristwatches and necklaces.

Mono told the court that they also made away with one Toshiba laptop and five mobile phones valued at N600, 000.

Counsel to the accused persons, Mr H.U. Ofondu said the court lacked jurisdiction to try the matter as it involved armed robbery. “The court only has power to try them on conspiracy charge, but lacks the jurisdiction on robbery charge,” he said.

The Magistrate, Mr J.A. Adegun, insisted that the court had jurisdiction to rule on the prosecution’s application to remand the accused persons since some items were recovered from them.
