Hoodlums Attempt To Burn BCOS


Mayhem that erupted today in Ibadan, capital of Oyo State, Nigeria, over an attempt to impeach the Speaker of Oyo State House of Assembly, Moruf Atilola, almost spread to the Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State (BCOS) as hoodlums gathered at Basorun Area and planned to burn the station.

The hoodlums, at least 200 of them, were prevented from burning the station by the police as the state Police Command quickly deployedi its men to secure the place.

At least 50 armed mobile policemen were deployed with armoured personnel carriers at about 3 p.m. today to safeguard the state owned electronic media.

As at the time of filing this report, policemen were at the station with armoured personnel carriers.

Confirming the report, the Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Bisi Okuwobi stated that police had prevented the hoodlums from carrying out the operation.

She said: “We are on ground to prevent hoodlums from unleashing their terror on the state,” adding that police would foil any attempt that is capable of putting the security of the state in jeopardy.

She warned political hoodlums to leave the state or be ready to face the full wrath of the police.

Oyo State Police Commissioner, Alhaji Adisa Baba Bolanta, has confirmed that 30 political thugs were arrested today in connection with the fracas at the Oyo State House of Assembly.

He promised that anyone involved would be prosecuted. Most of those arrested were Governor Adebayo Alao-Akala’s aides.

The lawmakers that wanted to impeach the speaker stated that impeachment has become necessary because the speaker has failed the state

They claimed that top officials of the state have collaborated to loot the treasury.

“They wanted us to keep quiet. They have usurped our power. We want to ensure that they don’t destroy the state for us. They must be checked,” said Nafiu Baale, one of the legislators.

Continuing, he said: “It was an insult to the House that we got to know about the fraud EFCC is investigating. We want to look into it but they are sidelining us. We cannot continue to keep quiet. We will fight this battle to a logical conclusion.”
