Comrade Adebamiro Damilola, popularly known as Da-Cool, has emerged as the new president of Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijagun, Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, Nigeria.
According to the result released by the Independent Tai Solarin Electoral Commission (ITEC), Comrade Adebamiro won by a landslide.
With a wide vote margin, compared to his nearest contenders, he received a total of 975 votes.
The new president thanked the students for their support and promised to protect their interests adequately.
The 300 Level English student told Campus Square he is ready to fight for the cause of TASUED students.
“In TASUED, students pay more but enjoy less. No conducive learning centres, no good roads and their interest has not been represented at the students union. That is the reason I promised to represent them and not allow my administration to be controlled by the management,†he stated.
Campus Square, however, leant that the turn-out of students during the election was very low, considering the total number of students in the institution and those that voted.
One of the contestants, Comrade Stephen Dada, who had 106 votes, said the level of students’ participation in campus unionism at TASUED is still very poor. He said the full-time students alone are over 20, 000, but less than 2,000 students voted during the election.
Meanwhile, some of the contestants alleged that the election was rigged in favour Comrade Adebamiro Damilola.
One of them, who craved anonymity, said the election was openly rigged in favour of Adebamiro, disclosing that ballot papers were smuggled inside the polling centre.
Efforts to speak with the Chairman of the Independent Tai Solarin Electoral Commission (ITEC), Comrade Muhajid, about the alleged malpractices during election proved abortive at the time of filing this report.
The outgoing president, Comrade Aduraleke Shobande, popularly known as Johnbill, denied the allegation, saying that the election was free and fair.
