The joy of a young man simply known as Pastor was short-lived when his newly-acquired Sport Utility Vehicle, SUV, ran over five kids, killing two of them instantly.
Corpses of the victims called Maria and Taiye have been deposited in the mortuary and the three injured were admitted at the Isolo General Hospital.
The accident which occurred last Saturday has thrown many residents of Ijagemo in Iba Local Council Development Area, LCDA, of Lagos State, Nigeria into mourning, as sympathisers continued to throng the residence of the victims’ parents and two landlords whose houses were badly damaged.
P.M.NEWS gathered that Pastor, who has just moved to his one-storey building at Oremeji Lanlate Street, Ijagemo, sent for his friend, a resident of Abaranje, to teach him how to drive.
Eyewitnesses said when he was being taught by his friend, they lost control of the vehicle which suddenly veered off the road and ran over the kids.
Shortly after the accident, some relatives of one of the victim’s parents arrived from Itire in Lagos. They attempted to set the SUV and the two damaged houses on fire. The baale of Ijagemo, Chief Hakeem Babatunde Balogun, intervened, but could not save the SUV from being badly damage by the victims’relatives.
The police later arrived from Isheri-Oshun Divisional Headquarters and moved the car to their station, while the men were arrested. A source close to the Isheri-Oshun Police Station informed P.M.NEWS that five of the men would soon be charged to court to answer charges of intentional and malicious damage.
Meanwhile, Maria’s mother was said to have been moved out of Ijagemo to recover from the shock, while Taiye’s father reportedly said he was not interested in any court case but wanted the corpse of his child to be released to him for burial.
He is hoping for better treatment and prayer for the survival of his second child, who is still on admission in the hospital.
