The Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT, Ogun State branch, today boycotted the peace meeting called by the state government in Abeokuta.
P.M.NEWS findings revealed that the Ogun State NUT has been having series of meetings recently to finetune its planned strike.
It therefore decided to boycott the meeting called by the state government.
The union maintained that it will attend only the meeting called by the state governor, Otunba Gbenga Daniel or the state Commissioner for Education.
A source informed P.M.NEWS that the NUTÂ has told its members not to attend the meeting called by the Special Adviser to the governor Otunba Francis Banwo
According to the source, “the government is not ready to listen to us. It is now clear that the administration of Otunba Daniel is planning to disrupt the system of education before leaving office and also wished to disrupt the future of our children.
“We gave the government a 21-day ultimatum which lapsed last week. We issued another seven-day ultimatum from Tuesday. Failure to meet our demands will result in a strike action.
“We have understood the political gimmick of the governor. He was awarded the Best Performing Governor in Education last year. What is the basis for the award in a state where teachers’ salaries are not paid as at when due? Where teachers are maltreated; what’s the yardstick for giving OGD the award?â€
The Ogun NUT has fixed its general meeting for Wednesday, 30 June after the expiration of the ultimatum, where the decision on a strike action will be taken.
The teachers are demanding for promotion of primary school teachers, remittance of their pension money to the board, by the state government and putting an end to delay in payment of their cooperative contribution, after deduction and the delay in the payment of primary schools teachers’ salaries.
The Ogun State NUT has been at loggerheads with the state government since 2009, but several promises made were not fulfilled. The union has therefore declared its intention to embark on a strike.
Ogun State as at now has no commissioner for education following the appointment of the former commissioner, Prof. Segun Awonusi, as the Vice Chancellor, Tai Solarin University of Education in Ijagun, Ijebu-Ode.
