Cleric Cautions FG Against Extravagant Spending

The Director of Social Communications of the Lagos Catholic Archdiocese, Rev. Fr. Gabriel Osu, has urged the Federal Government to be prudent in celebrating the country’s 50th independence anniversary.

Nigeria gained political independence from Britain on Oct.1, 1960.

The Federal Government has reportedly set aside N10 billion for the celebration.

Osu told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Tuesday that although 50 years of independence was remarkable, the government should not be extravagant.

The cleric said that the golden jubilee should be a time for sober reflection for the leadership, with a view to moving the country forward.

“It is better to channel funds to rebuilding Nigeria than using them for an unnecessary celebration that won’t help the society.
