Cashier Bolts Away With Workers' Salary

A cashier at Mercantile Company Ltd., Fatai Atere Way, Mushin, Lagos, Nigeria, has bolted away with N2 million meant for the payment of workers’ salary.

The cashier, Akande Kehinde, 25, was alleged to have stolen the money and ran away.

Luck, however, ran out on him when he was arrested while trying to flee the country.

He was charged before the Isolo Magistrate’s Court for stealing, an offence contrary to Section 390 of the Criminal Code, Cap.38, Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2004.

He pleaded not guilty to the charge and the presiding magistrate, Mrs. F. O. Aigbekhaevbo, granted him bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties.

The court ordered that the sureties must be working in reputable organisations and must show evidence of payment of tax while their addresses must be verified by the court.

The matter has been adjourned till 23 September, 2010 while the accused was remanded in prison custody, pending the fulfilment of his bail conditions.
