Doctors Go On Strike Over Abduction

Medical doctors in the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH) on Monday, commenced a work to rule to protest against the kidnapping of their Chief Pediatrician and Consultant Surgeon, Dr Usen Uwah by gunmen.

Uwah, who was a former Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee of the hospital, was abducted on Friday night on his way home from the hospital.

In a letter addressed to the State Police Commissioner and signed by Dr Emem Bassey on behalf of the Chief Medical Director (CMD), they appealed to the police to secure the release of the man without further delay.

“We hereby appeal that you commence urgent investigations into the matter so that the perpetrators of this act could be identified and brought to book,” the letter said.

They said close to 10 doctors have been kidnapped and one killed in recent times and warned that if the ugly trend was not checked, it could lead to exodus of doctors from the state.
