Prince ‘Wale Oladunjoye, Senior Special Assistant on Grassroots Sports Development to Governor Babatunde Fashola (SAN) of Lagos State, Nigeria, says the Super Eagles, with their poor outing in the just concluded South Africa 2010 World Cup, ridiculed the image of Nigerians all over the world.

He said the abysmal performance of the Kanu Nwankwo skippered side at the Mundial has put every Nigerian to shame as those carrying Nigerian passports are always confronted with questions over the poor showing of the star-studded Eagles in the World Cup

Oladunjoye, who was in South Africa to watch the World Cup said his passion and love for the Eagles took him to South Africa, but he was embarrassed that the team could only pick a point from three matches and crashed out so early in a World Cup staged on African soil.

“I was in South Africa as a Nigerian and as a fan of the Super Eagles because the World Cup was being staged in Africa for the first time in the history of FIFA. It was a pity that after they crashed out, citizens of other countries who loved the Eagles as we do continued asking questions about what really happened to Nigeria.  It is appalling, because South Africans gave us everything. They stood by us. They thought it was ‘Giant Nigeria’ that would make Africa proud.”

Oladunjoye noted that FIFA placed very high stakes on Nigeria but the Eagles fell short of the confidence reposed in them. He, however, blamed the Eagles’ woes in South Africa on shoddy preparation and administrative ineptitude.

The Tournament Director of the annual Governor’s Cup Lagos Tennis Championship told P.M.Sports in Johannesburg that he was proud of the exploits of Ghana’s Black Stars, adding that Africa fell short of FIFA’s expectations that one of the teams would reach the semi final stage of the World Cup.
