Olympic Day Run: Lagos May Miss Out

Lagos State may miss this year’s Olympic Day run which comes up at the weekend throughout the country.

gathered that Lagos State has not signified its intention to be part of the event set aside for people from different background, race and religion to learn about Olympic values of excellence, friendship and respect.

Olabanji Oladapo, Secretary-General of the Nigeria Olympic Committee, NOC, said Lagos has not indicated interest to take part in the Olympic Day Run, three days to the event. He disclosed that Ondo, Ekiti, Niger, Plateau, Bayelsa, Edo, Akwa Ibom and Imo are some of the states that have indicated their interest to be part of the event.

According to him, the participating states are expected to feature in jogging and aerobics, cultural display and the demonstration of some sports to commemorate the event.

To accommodate people of all age groups in the celebration, the run has been broken down to stages of 3km, 6km and 10km.

The Olympic Day Run celebration was initiated in 1987 by the International Olympic Committee, IOC, to commemorate the founding of the Olympic Movement under the leadership of Frenchman, Baron Pierre De Coubertin on 23 June, 1894.
