LG Boss Rates Sports Festival High

Chairman of Ifako Ijaiye Local Government, Honourable Demola Doherty has expressed happiness over the success of the maiden edition of the council’s Sports Festival.

The one-day event was held on Monday, 12 July, 2010 at the Teachers Training College playground, Ifako-Ijaiye

Doherty, who was the chief host of the event, said the sports festival was put together to discover talents in primary schools within Ifako-Ijaiye and Ojokoro Local Council Development Area, adding that he was impressed by the performance of the pupils taking part in various sporting events in the fiesta.

“I was very impressed with the turn out of schools in this event. This is to tell you that Nigeria has many talents that are yet to be discovered. My administration will continue to support sports development and ensure that youth of the council are empowered through sports,”he said.

The council boss gave Miss Ubong Edet, a pupil of African Church Primary School, Ifako-Ijaiye a scholarship for winning three gold medals in 100m, 200m and 4x400m relay race. He said the exploits of Miss Edet should be an example to others to emulate.

“Ubong Edet is a real champion by winning the three gold medals in track events. It’s my wish to announce a scholarship award to her. The council will sponsor Miss Edet to pursue her education to a higher institution,” he said

An elated Edet, who is a Primary Five pupil, said she was happy that the sport festival brought her to the limelight and promised to take sports as a chosen career

“I give all glory to Almighty God for giving me the opportunity to come out victorious in all events I took part. I am happy that my school fees will now be paid by the council. I will continue to work harder to achieve greatness in my life,” she said

In the football event, Ifako-Ijaiye defeated Ojokoro 4-2 through penalty shootout after one goal apiece at regulation time.
