The Ijebu-Ode Unit Command of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) has apprehended more than 413 traffic offenders on the Ijebu-Ode-Benin highway in the past one month.
The Unit Commander, Mr. Yakubu Anto, made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ijebu-Ode on Wednesday.
Anto explained that the offenders who were arrested for overspeeding, overloading, non-use of seat belts and reckless driving had been sanctioned.
The Unit Commander said that nine crashes, involving 46 persons, were also recorded on the highway during the period under review.
He explained that four out of the 46 people involved in the crashes lost their lives, 40 sustained serious injuries while only two escaped unhurt.
“This indeed is a colossal waste. It is not the best but it happens due to the careless attitude of motorists on highways.
“Road crashes are due to three major factors, human, environmental and weather but the principal cause is the human factor.
“Prayers alone cannot stop road crashes but rather people must assist themselves by being careful while driving on major highways.â€
He noted that the Public Enlightenment Unit of the Commission had engaged in public lectures, rallies and awareness campaigns for motorists at major motor parks in the town.
According to him, the campaign is on the need to exercise caution while driving on major highways.
He said that officials of the commission always went on patrol from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on highways to ensure that traffic rules were obeyed.
“Life does not have duplicate, so we tell motorists plying the highways in our campaign.
