Factory Workers Protest Inhuman Treatment

Lawyers at the Federal High Court, Alausa, Ikeja, were this morning thrown into tears when the photographs of injured workers of a manufacturing company, Celplas Industry Nigeria Ltd., were displayed before them.

The aggrieved workers also confirmed that all of them have been sacked by the company located on Fatai Atere Road, Matori, Lagos.

Among the lawyers who vowed to fight for the workers included Wahab Shittu, constitutional lawyer, Gabriel Ojumah of the Citizens Rights Watch and Deji Fasusi.

The workers, who had various degree of injuries, including chopped hands and mutilated fingers from dangerous chemicals and malfunctioning machines, carried placards with various inscriptions including: “Indian/Chinese & Lebanese, Stop amputating our leaders of tomorrow,” “See what Indians and Lebanese have done to Nigerian workers.”

While the personnel manager of the company, Mr. Thompson Oyebola, refused to comment on the allegations levelled against the company by the victims, Barrister Adetokunbo Mumuni of the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) and lawyer to the company, condemned the workers for trying to put the company into disrepute, saying the grounds on which they were fighting was wrong.
