A People’s Democratic Party (PDP) stalwart in Lagos State, Tola Animashaun, has emphasised the need for the state wing of the party to embark on aggressive membership drive aimed at expanding its frontiers in order to give it the necessary leverage for victory in 2011.

He stressed that victory in Lagos is particularly important, in view of the strategic significance of the state, not only as the economic and commercial capital of Nigeria and West Africa, but also the melting point of diverse ethnic groups in the country.

In the pursuit of this objective, Animashaun, who has declared his interest in the race for the Lagos Central Senatorial District in the state, said he has mobilised his supporters and ready to make sure that PDP wins Lagos in the forthcoming elections.

According to him, “it is pertinent to emphasise that I did a research in which I discovered, to my chagrin, that a lot of people are actually fed up with the ruling government in Lagos because of its cosmetic administration and are only waiting to the prodded to cross over to another party.

It is therefore my belief that this category of disenchanted lots need to be actively mobilised. We do not necessarily have to wait for them, we need to find a way of beckoning to them, woo and mobilise them through little incentives and sustained and intensified enlightenment campaigns, on what the PDP stands for and how to enlist them as members. This is because a lot of people are out there, who probably would have wished to join, but do not know how to go about it.”

The senatorial aspirant said the exercise is a continuous one as he also intends to even do more in the drive to give the PDP effective leverage in the 2011 polls in Lagos State, while urging that all hands must be on deck in the onerous task to massively enlist new members, considering the fact that political power and victory in politics is a game of number.
