NGO Wins Gani Fawehinmi Prize

Access to Justice (AJ), a justice advocacy group, is this year’s winner of the Gani Fawehinmi prize for human rights and social justice.

AJ is a justice advocacy group which defends rights of equal and non-discriminatory access to judicial institutions.

The group won the prize for its outstanding distinction through boldness, rights of the voiceless and demand for accountable governance.

Access to justice has successfully represented indigent persons who have been unjustly imprisoned, tortured, brutalised, oppressed and provided services to families whose relatives have been extrajudicially murdered.

In collaboration with the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, Action to Justice has successfully worked for the reform of fundamental rights (enforcement procedure) Rules 1979 whch effort produced the new fundamental rights (enforcement procedure)  Rules 2009 promulgated by the Chief Justice of Nigeria in 2009.

Chief Gani Fawehinmi spent his life time fighting for the right to bring legal complaints against mis-governance.
