A robbery suspect who was arrested with a revolver pistol at Seme Border has denied ownership of the gun, claiming he found the gun on the ground at the trailer tarmac.
Police investigation revealed that the suspect identified as Joseph Udo Akpan, 36, was arrested by policemen at the Seme border post after he allegedly robbed one of his kinsmen simply called Uwem who reside at 24 Bakery Road, Seme at gun point and escaped.
The victim, Uwem was said to have trailed him to the border post where he sighted him and alerted the police who arrested him.
When he was searched, a revolver pistol with 17 rounds of ammunition and a packet of razor was found on him and after a preliminary investigation, he was transfered to the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad office at Adeniyi-Adele Road Lagos Island, Lagos, Nigeria, where he is currently being interrogated.
In his confessional statement to the police at the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad, FSARS, Udo Akpan said: “I am not a robber, I work in the coldroom where I packed turkey and chicken for customers at Benin Republic Seme Border axis. I was coming from Benin Republic in the night when I hit my leg on an object inside a black nylon bag at the trailer tarmac at the Seme border. I picked it up and when I opened it, I found the gun inside and I took it to show my brother, Uwem; there I was arrested. I don’t know anything about the gun and I did not use it to rob any body,†he said.
However, the police at the FSARS have described the suspect as a notorious robber who has been terrorising and robbing innocent road users and traders of their possessions for a long time.
The suspect, the police said will soon be arraigned in court to face prosecution.
