The National Association of Nigerian Students, NAN, has berated the Ogun State governor, Otunba Gbenga Daniel over his nonchalant attitude to the plight of the education sector in the state, which has resulted in a showdown between the state government and the West African Examinations Council, WAEC.
In a statement released in Abeokuta and signed by the Chairman, National Inter-campuses Relations Committee of NAN, Comrade Akidoye Oyeniyi on behalf of all Nigerian students, NAN said its “attention has been drawn to the crisis in the education sector in Ogun State, especially the recent withholding of SSCE results because of the state’s indebtedness to WAEC.
Oyeniyi said, “it is glaring that the choice of footing examination bills by the state is not directly related to developmental objectives in the education sector or public intent but political, hence our call on President Goodluck Jonathan, the Minister of Education and all stakeholders to earnestly intervene as we will continue to press for 26% UNESCO standard to total budgetary allocation to education.
