NYSC Sports Festival Hots Up

The 2010 zonal preliminaries of the Director General’s competition, otherwise known as NYSC  Sports Festival are heating up at the Nigerian Army Resettlement Centre, Oshodi, Lagos,  Nigeria.

The Volleyball team of NYSC Osun State outspiked their counterparts from Oyo 3-1, while Ogun  lost 0-3 to Ondo yesterday.

The football event saw the NYSC Oyo defeating Osun 3-1, Ogun lost by a lone goal to Ondo,  while in athletics, Oyo and Ondo States emerged champions of the 100m male and female events  respectively.

NYSC Kwara won the gold medal of the 4x100m relay for men while the female gold went to NYSC  Ogun. Ogun and Osun won a gold medal each in the Dance and Drama events respectively.

Meanwhile, the athletes featuring in the competition have been advised to exhibit the spirit  of sportsmanship. Coordinator of the NYSC Lagos state, Mr. L.A.Laniyan stated this while  speaking to the five states participating in the festival, which ends on Saturday.

Laniyan advised the athletes not to lose sight of the basic aim of the competition and urged  them to remember that in any competition, there must be winners and losers.

“I therefore want to enjoin all the competitors to embrace one another. To me, all the  participants in this competition have made their mark and deserve to be warmly commended for  sacrificing their time and energy for the rigorous training sessions before the competition  started,” he said

He disclosed that the annual sports festival is designed by the NYSC management to create a  platform for interaction among the corps members serving in various states of the  federation.

He therefore expressed gratitude to the authorities of the Nigerian Armed Forces  Re-settlement Centre for allowing the organisers to use their facilities at a very short  notice.
