This yearâ€™s world disaster reduction day celebration was yesterday observed by the Ojokoro Local Council Development Area.
The event took place at the council secretariat, Agbado Station road, Ijaiye Ojokoro, Lagos.
Chairman, Ojokoro LCDA, Hon. Benjamin Adeyemi Olabinjo, described the event as a demonstration of Lagos State governmentâ€™s policy of providing proactive measures and create public awareness at the local government level, as well as sensitise residents on precautionary measures to avoid unnecessary loss of lives and properties during disasters.
Chief Olabinjo appealed to all to make environmental safety their watchword by not engaging in activities that could endanger their lives, like phoning while driving, drinking while driving and blocking of drainages.
Also speaking at the occasion, Personal Assistant to the Special Adviser to Governor Fashola on LASEMA, Mr. Giwa Femi, who delivered a paper on: â€˜Reducing Disaster Risks and Challengesâ€™ in a mega city like Lagos, said: â€œThe Lagos State law empowers the agency to coordinate the activities of stakeholders herein referred to as responders (primary, secondary and tertiary) in the state, amongst others.
