Defend Democracy, Groups Tell Nigerians
The Coalition Against Corrupt Leaders, CACOL, and the People’s Action for Democracy, PAD, have called on Nigerians to take action for democracy and join in the struggle for a free, just and equitable society.
The call was made at a seminar organised by the two groups with the theme: “Redefining Democracy to Reflect the Need of the People,†held at Gateway Hotel, Ota, Ogun State, South-West Nigeria, recently.
Comrade Amitolu Shittu, deputy chairman, People’s Action for Democracy, South West, explained that the power tussle that has persisted among the two powerful arms of its government in Ogun State, which has therefore made the citizens of Ogun to suffer in silence was bringing governance to a comatose.
Shittu advised Nigerians to put into the drive unity of purpose which will remove all inhibition that has slowed down the progress of the state.
The chairman of CACOL, Debo Adeniran explained that the goal of the forum is to provide a platform for experts to explain the intricacies of separation of powers, checks and balances in the executive -legislative work in a democarcy, with a view to enhancing the credibility of governance, and for elected officers to assert the legitimacy of their tenure relative to assigned constitutional roles where the best interest of the people will be sacrosanct using the crisis in Ogun State as a case study said the nation’s democracy needs to be redefined to reflect the authority of the people in determining how they should be ruled in open parliament, where the true aggregate of peoples’ opinion will determine policy direction of the government.
