We Are Not Desperate —IBB

Former military president, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida has said that PDP presidential aspirants from the north were not desperate to become president in 2011.

Babangida told newsmen at the Presidential Wing of the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Ikeja, on Sunday that they were only insisting that the zoning formula of the party should be respected.

He said that the zoning formula of PDP had helped to stabilise the nation’s polity, saying that the process did not start in 2010, but dates back to 1999.

According to him, “this process has been on, so, it is not the north or south, it is the process of selection.

“There has always been a misconception and l will seize this opportunity to correct it, that misconception is very simple.

“Whoever emerges as the candidate of a political party is aspiring to be the president of this great country.

“We zoned political offices so that every part of the country, irrespective of religion or ethnicity, will have a hope that one day, it will come to their turn.

“I think I should try to clarify it, we don’t want to be seen as candidates of the north but as Nigerian candidates who are in a political party,’’ Babangida said.

He said that the party’s rules and regulations should be followed, adding “where it is not followed, the party should go through the same process of convention to jettison it.”

Babangida said that the rule or formula could also be corrected constitutionally.

The former military ruler said he was not distracted by criticisms over his ambition, saying “the honest straight answer is no.’’
