Suntan Beach, Badagry Wears New Look
Suntan Beach, Badagry, venue of the Grand Finale of “Olokun Festival 2010’’ is wearing a new look ahead of the event scheduled for Saturday.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the management of the resort has overhauled facilities at the venue in readiness for the festival.
Mr. Wahab Isiaka, Chairman, Royal Nights Committee of the Festival, told NAN on Tuesday that its objective was to revive and promote Yoruba culture in Nigeria and Africa.
NAN reports that Olokun Festival is celebrated by the Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC), a social-political group in the Southwest.
Events lined up for this year’s festival include beauty pageant, beach soccer, boat regatta, film shows and quiz competition.
Isiaka said the chief promoter of the Olokun Festival, the OPC leader, Otunba Gani Adams was already in contact with the management of the resort to ensure a successful outing.
He said that Gov. Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State; the Akran of Badagry, Aholu Menu Toyi I; Amb. Segun Olusola; Prof. Akinwumi Ishola; and Mr. Adebayo Faleti, were expected at the finale.
According to him, visitors are expected from Dubai, South Africa, Ghana, Togo and Benin Republic.
NAN reports that the annual Olokun festival is usually preceded by the Olosa festival, when worshippers gather at the Marina Sea-Side in Badagry to worship the river goddess.
