LASU ASUU Adamant On Strike

Lecturers at the Lagos State Univesity, Ojo have vowed to continue their five-week old strike. The striking lecturers declared that the strike will continue indefinitely.

Making this vow shortly after a meeting of the LASU chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) held at the Sociology Hall, Professor Tunde Fashanu of the Foreign Languages Department, LASU, accused the government of refusing to implement the agreement reached between the Federal Government of Nigeria and ASUU, adding that this might lead to many departments being denied accreditation by the National University Commission (NUC).

He confirmed that the state government has approved payment of the 15 percent salary increase of March 2010, with arrears and arrears of 86 months of HATTISS, ”but the main agreement between the FGN  and ASUU must be implemented,” he added.

“Comrades are saying that the only way the university can survive and its courses accredited is by the state government implementing the FGN-ASUU agreement.

“The Lagos State Government is refusing to implement the agreement, instead they are increasing the salary arears which is not the most important thing. They have not met the three demands of the university,” says the chairman, Dr. Kabir Olusegun Akinyemi of LASU.

”Comrades are also saying that if the state government fails to implement the FGN-ASUU agreement till December, that the university will be empty, as their members will not return to work,” he stated further.
