The Nigeria Premier League, NPL has cleared the air over Wednesday’s appearance of its chairman, Davidson Owumi, at the office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.
Owumi, according to NPL was never handcuffed as he was preparing to meet other board members of the league body that day when two men from the commission arrived the venue.
“The men from the commission requested that the presence of the NPL chairman was needed at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja, which he obliged politely. Owumi was later released after he was interrogated by the commission based on allegations filed against him by Barrister Ray Nnaji. He spent 45 minutes at the headquarters of the commission,†the NPL said.
The body further pointed to the comment of the EFCC spokesman, Femi Babafemi, who described the development as a routine process of interrogation.
“He was picked in Abuja for questioning. It was just a routine question-and-answer session. That’s why we released him after interrogating him,†said the EFCC spokesman.
Owumi later presided over the meeting of the board at the headquarters of the Nigeria Premier League.
