Church Tasks Members On Voter’s Card
A Port Harcourt-based church, Abundant Life Mission, has mandated its members to obtain INEC registration cards for the 2011 general elections.
Apostle Eugene Ogu, the General Overseer of the Church, who stated the position of the church to newsmen in Port Harcourt on Sunday, said the decision was to empower members to vote for credible people in 2011.
He said the decision had been endorsed by the church council.
“As soon as INEC starts registration of voters, all branches of Abundant Life Mission will introduce `service show me your voter’s card’ for every members of 18 years and above,’’ he stated.
Ogu noted that with a credible person at the helm of affairs at INEC, Nigerians could use their cards to exclude corrupt people from public office.
“Political apathy in 2011 is not necessary; let every eligible person participate effectively to rediscover the genuine route to Nigeria’s growth.
“So much has gone down the drain in the last 50 years, and we cannot afford to continue this way,†he said.
The clergy man urged Nigerians, especially Christians, to take part in the 2011Â elections, explaining that it was not abominable for a Christian to be in politics.
Ogu also urged church leaders in the country to aid government’s effort in the administration of the nation.
“The church must show the way out of the tunnel of darkness. Apart from spiritual development, the church should be involved in education, health and moral growth of the people,†he said.
The clergy man said more than 200 students benefited from the church’s scholarship scheme, adding: “Some beneficiaries are studying in British and Ghanaian tertiary institutions.’’
