Kucova  won the first leg of the Etisalat/FCMB sponsored tournament last Saturday  after she defeated Austrian Melaine Klaffner 6-0, 6-2 in the Women’s Singles final.

She noted that the standard of the International Tennis Federation, ITF, approved  championship is improving over the years and the player is glad to be part of the  competition this year.

“I’m glad to be here this year,” said Kucova, who won the two legs of the 9th  edition last year. “I have a lot of things at the back of my mind coming to the  Governor’s Cup this year. Apart from the target to win the two legs as I did last  year, I want to use the tourney to prepare myself for the Australian Open which  comes up in January next year,” she said.

The Slovak, who is a top seeded player in the Women’s Singles of the ongoing  Governor’s Cup at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, Onikan, Lagos, Nigeria, disclosed that  she did not register for the doubles’ event of the championship because she wants to  be on top of her game.

“I want to concentrate on the singles. It will allow me to focus on my target. I’m  glad that I did well in the first leg and this second leg, I believe I’ll crown my  effort with the ultimate prize and win more points to improve my position on the  world ranking,” she said.

Kucova entered Futures 1 of the Governor’s Cup as number 123 player in the world and  at the end of the first week; her ranking improved drastically to number 110, moving  up 13 places.

“Climbing on the ranking is the essence of going around the World to play  tournaments. My performance in the Governor’s Cup has always reflected in my ranking  and I’m happy that I’m gaining a lot by coming to Nigeria,” she said.

“I like the people and weather of Nigeria. They are accommodating and friendly.  These are some of the reasons  for coming to Lagos, Nigeria every year. I hope to be  here  next year again,” she concluded.
