Wife Remanded In Prison Over Late Hubby's Unpaid Loan

For failing to produce her husband she stood as surety to obtain a loan of N1.5m  from a micro finance bank, a 30-year old woman has been remanded in prison custody.

The accused, Mrs. Kehinde Jones, was remanded in prison custody after she was  charged before the Yaba Magistrate’s Court and failed to meet the bail conditions.

Kehinde’s ordeal started when she stood as surety for her husband, Mr. Kole Jones,  to obtain a loan of N1.5m from Credit Plus Micro Finance Bank in Lagos, Lagos State,  Nigeria.

Mr. Jones was said to have disappeared after collecting the money and efforts by the  wife to locate him proved abortive.

The company reported the matter to policemen at the Adekunle Police Station and the  wife was arrested and charged before the Yaba Magistrate’s Court on a three-count  charge of obtaining money under false pretence, an offence punishable under sections  516 (a) (1), 419 and 390 (9) of the Criminal Code, Cap.C.17, Vol. 11, Laws of Lagos  State of Nigeria.

Count two of the charge reads: ”That you, Kehinde Jones with others at large on 22  June, 2010 at Credit Plus Microfinance Bank in the aforesaid magisterial district  with intent to defraud obtained the sum of N1.5m from one Edwin Iyadi, the Managing  Director of Credit Plus MicroFinance Bank Limited.

She pleaded not guilty to the charge and the magistrate granted her bail in the sum  of N200,000 with two sureties.

The matter has been adjourned till 22 November, 2010.
