As part of the preparation to ensure a successful staging of the Intercontinental Wrestling Championship tagged BRF Wrestlemania 2010, the Local Organising Committee, LOC has commenced screening of Nigerian wrestlers who will take part in the tourney.
The championship, which will hold in Lagos, Nigeria, next month is being organised to honour the Governor of Lagos State, Babatunde Raji Fashola for his contribution to sports development in the country.
The LOC, headed by Primate Charles Odugbesi, has since Wednesday begun the screening of intending wrestlers for the tourney, which will be staged in eleven centres spread across the state.
P.M.Sports gathered that at least 39 local wrestlers assembled at the Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium for the screening which ends today.
Coordinator of the tourney, Alhaji Hameed Mohammed said 19 lucky wrestlers will be selected at the end of the exercise, .
Some of the local wrestlers are Erunjeje, Tony Shole, Lee Power, Afro Giant Scatter, Rocky Johnson, Bily Akashilee and Virgo Lee. Others are Sadula, Bunmi, Bakary and Bekky.
Mohammed, a former Nigerian wrestling international, also disclosed that 28 foreign wrestlers spread across the continents of the world have signified their interest to feature in the week-long event.
“Out of these 28 wrestlers, we’ll select 20 for the championship proper. The event will be the talk of town for sometime to come. We are gradually ready to host the event,†he said.
Meanwhile, the LOC has concluded arrangements to present the customised seven golden belts and three trophies, meant for the winners of the tourney, to Governor Fashola on Monday at his Ikeja office.
