Fashola Okays Tennis League For Lagos

Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Raji Fashola, has again demonstrated his love for sports, as he has approved the commencement of tennis league in Lagos.

Fashola, who was the Special Guest of Honour at the closing ceremony of the 10th Governor’s Cup Lagos Tennis Championship at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club on Saturday, revealed that discussion has reached an advanced stage with sponsors of the Gov’s Cup, Etisalat and FCMB on the need to partner with the state government to begin tennis league soon.

The CEO of Etisalat, Steve Evans and a representative of FCMB, Peter Osagie, were with the governor to watch the Men’s Singles final between Indian Karan Rastogi and South African Raven Klaasen. The Indian boy won 6-2, 6-7,7-5.

Governor Fashola said  Prince ‘Wale Oladunjoye, the Tournament Director of the Governor’s Cup, will be working directly with the sponsor to ensure a successful take off of the tennis league.

Fashola noted that Lagos State is ready to pioneer the redevelopment and regeneration of tennis in Nigeria first with the tennis league, while other programmes to sustain the project will follow in the future.

Speaking about the performance of the finalists, Governor Fashola showed encomiums on Rastogi and Klaasen, saying that the players deserved their places in the final of Futures 2 of the Governor’s Cup this year.

“I think the two finalists deserved playing in the final and I want to congratulate the winner, who displayed a high sense of professionalism,” said Fashola, who watched the pulsating final that lasted about three hours Saturday evening.

The Governor also commended the Local Organising Committee, LOC, of the championship headed by Chief Pius Akinyelure, whom he said did a good job by putting up a memorable and glamorous 10th edition of the championship.

“The organisers of the tournament have done a good job. We are here today to celebrate a decade of the Governor’s Cup in Nigeria and I’m glad to be part of the event,” said Fashola.
