National Schools’ Sports Festival: Team Lagos Commended

The Lagos State’s contingent to the just concluded 2010 National Schools’ Sports Festival has been commended for a job well done.

Dewunmi Ogunsanya, the Director of Sports, Lagos State Sports Council, LSSC, commended the state’s contingent for doing the state proud in the festival, saying their victory is the manifestation of the state government’s efforts to develop sports from the grassroots.

He stated that the team’s victorious outing in Kano State has shown that the state is moving towards the right direction in sports development, which the Babatunde Raji Fashola government has been propagating  in the state.

The state topped the medals table at the festival with 54 gold, 61 sliver and 57 bronze medals to emerge overall winner of the schools’ sports festival. Lagos hosted the first edition.

Ogunsanya noted that the  genuine sports development can only be achieved through the schools, hence the state’s plan to organise age group competitions and provide sporting facilities to enhance sports development.

He disclosed that the performance of the state’s athletes at the national competitions in the past few months is an indication that Lagos State is ready to reclaim its leadership role in sports in the country. He said the state will show its true colour when the National Sports Festival holds early next year in Port Harcourt.

Alhaji Addo Mohammed, a director in the Ministry of Education, said the Federal Government is set to revive  sports generally in the country and among the youths in particular.

Ondo State came second with 52 gold, 29 silver, and 34 bronze medals, while host, Kano finished third with 47 gold, 40 silver and 56 bronze medals.

Lagos was represented by 241-member contingent, comprising 198 Athletes and 43 officials.

Meanwhile, Rivers State has been given the hosting rights for the next edition of the schools’ festival in 2011.
