HOS Charges Magistrates On Justice Dispensation
The Lagos State Head of Service, HOS, Mr. Adesegun Ogunlewe has charged magistrates in the state to embrace the virtues of honesty, hard work, fairness and godliness in the discharge of their duties and dispensation of justice.
Ogunlewe gave this advice when some members of the Lagos State Magistrates visited him. He said for peace and tranquillity to reign in any society, those charged with the responsibility of dispensing justice must be honest, fair and just.
The HOS added that it was only on this premise that the responsibilities of Magistrates could be appreciated, charging them to be godly so that God could guide them at all times in the discharge of their duties. He added that mere knowledge alone was not enough in arriving at what was just.
He urged them to be committed and diligent in the discharge of their duties, adding that they should fulfil whatever role they were given optimally and encouraged them to continue to acquire knowledge and skills in order to meet up with the challenges of the 21st century.
The HOS added that as a learning state, officials of the state government should see themselves as learning officers and should strive to continue to learn more and embark on capacity building in order to meet the challenges of the 21st century. He said the state government would not shy away from its responsibility of providing capacity building and knowledge acquisition.
Ogunlewe commended the Chief Judge and the judiciary for organising a retreat for magistrates and judges, saying that the retreat would provide a forum for the magistrates to do self-assessment of their activities and chart new ways of improving on their performance.
