Chairman Senate Committee on Privatisation, Sen. Ayodele Arise (PDP-Ekiti), says the  Federal Government’s planned privatisation of PHCN will revitalise the ailing  company on completion.

Arise made the statement in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in  Abuja on the seeming disapproval and threat by PHCN workers to embark on strike over  the issue.

“I will appeal to the staff to think about Nigerians. We have seen an experiment in  the past in the communications sector.

“And by and large, it has been very successful. I believe Nigerians are enjoying  the dividend of that action, as every one now has access to a telephone,  irrespective of your status,’’ he said.

“We have seen that PHCN is a challenge to everyone in this nation. And any  situation that will bring about its improvement should be encouraged and praised by  the workers, particularly if they are very skilful people.

“There should be no worry or fear; those coming in will definitely absorb them  because they will require manpower.

“And for those who do not have the skills and will prefer to live in the past, I  will rather just appeal to them to give government a chance to improve that sector.

“I think it is proper to privatise the power holding company so that we can begin  to enjoy consistent supply of power so that our industrial sector can quickly take  off and employment level will also improve.

“My candid belief is that we should privatise PHCN,” he said.
