Mrs. Thabita Simon, a food vendor, has dragged her husband, Mr. Simon Danladi, before a Hwolshe Area Court in Jos, seeking the dissolution of their 22-year-old marriage.

Mrs. Simon wants a divorce because her husband allegedly depends on her.

She told the court on Thursday that she was tired of her husband’s “exploitative tendencies.’’

The complainant told the court that the marriage was blessed with four children but “the entire burden of running the house has been on me for the past 22 years.

“My Lord, I married my husband 22 years ago, knowing fully well that he was jobless, but up till today, he has never made any attempt to secure a job to support his family.’’

She further told the court that she had been taking care of the entire family through her food selling business.

“My husband relies heavily on me for his feeding, clothing, paying of children’s school fees and the yearly house rent.

“My Lord, when the burden of running the family became too much for me, I bought a motorcycle for him to do commercial cyclist business, but there was never a day he brought anything home,’’ she said.

Simon alleged that her husband had always spent proceeds from the commercial cyclist business on beer and female friends.

She alleged that she was particularly angered by the theft of her N25,000 by the husband.

“I was saving the money to pay house rent which will soon be due,’’ she said.

She told the court that her husband took away the money without her consent and squandered it on beer and women.

“As I am talking, the landlord of our house has given us quit notice,’’ she said.

Simon prayed the court to terminate the marriage so that she would not “die because of hypertension.’’

During cross-examination by the presiding judge, Alhaji Umar Shuaibu, the defendant begged the court not to terminate the marriage, saying that he still loved his wife.

Simon promised a change of attitude so as to contribute to the upkeep of the family.

He blamed his unwholesome behaviour on peer-group influence.

The judge ordered the couple to come to the next sitting with their elders and adjourned the case to Nov. 19.
