Some public schools in Somolu Local Government Area of Lagos State, South West Nigeria, have been observed to be wearing new look.
A recent tour of the local government by P.M. News revealed that most of the primary schools in the area have been rehabilitated while some are undergoing rehabilitation.
Some residents of the area that spoke with P.M. News on the development commended the council chairman, Mr. Gbolahan Bagostowe, for the good gesture, saying the schools were such in deplorable state before their rehabilitation and are now conducive for leaning.
According to Taiwo Adeolu, one of the resident, “before the coming in of the council chairman, schools’ structures were in bad state and pupils learnt under harsh conditions. At times, when it rained, they would have to be taken elsewhere because roofs of some of the classrooms are leaking, while some lack lockers and benches for the pupils to sit and write. But now, the story has changed.
“Bagostowe has reconstructed some of the buildings and equipped them with furniture and pupils can now learn in a conducive environment as against what it used to be in the past.â€
A teacher at Agunbiade Primary School, said “this is a new era in the education sector in this local government as we have never had it so good like this in the past. We, the teachers in this local government, are proud of the council chairman.
“Apart from rehabilitation of schools, more have been done to teachers and this has never happened in the history of the local government.â€
P.M. News learnt that the local government has been able to renovate seven schools including Igbobi, Ola-Olu, Agunbiade, Baptist, S.S. Peter and Paul and Wright/Wesley, while Odunlade Primary School and others are currently undergoing rehabilitation.
Apart from rehabilitation of schools, it was also gathered that pupils in the local government were given free school uniforms, a pair of sandals and socks, while benches, tables, chairs and desks were also provided.
