Don’t Scrap 6-3-4 Education System, NAPTAN Tells FG
The National Parents/Teachers Association of Nigeria (NAPTAN), yesterday urged the Federal Government not to scrap the 6-3-3-4 system of education.
NAPTAN’s National Coordinator, Alhaji Babs Animashaun, said in a statement in Lagos that the system itself was not the problem but that of implementation.
He blamed government at all levels for inadequate funding and inconsistency in the implementation of the policy.
“The 6-3-3-4 system has not achieved its desired goals not because the system has failed but because the system has been crippled by non-implementation.
“Since its introduction, successive governments have not been allocating enough funds for equipment and building of workshops in schools, among other needs,†he  said.
Rather than outright scrapping of the system, Animashaun urged government to probe the poor performance of students during major examinations.
“The Federal Government should give sufficient thought to the new plan and the possible consequences of abandoning the 6-3-3-4 system,†he added.
He also urged government to adequately fund the Inspectorate Division of the Federal Ministry of Education to enable it function optimally.
Animashaun further called for a well structured programme for training and re-training of teachers across the country.
